napolean dynamite

In comparison to the other opening sequences, the credits of Napolean Dynamite are contrastingly more unique. They are presented through the use of plates, which suggests that the narrative of the movie revolves around a household as plates are quite domestic objects. The way in which these plates are used signifies that the characters that the film involves are of a young age. This is because many of the plates are decorated with childlike drawings and the typeography used to display the individual credits is similar to that of a young person's. From this, we can see that the audience that this intro is targetting is a young demographic. There is a limited variation in the camera shots used, as it mostly consists of close ups at a bird's eye view angle looking directly down at the plates. This puts the audience in a more engaging position, as it then feels like they are more involved because they can see the object from the perspective of the person handling them. The use of the close ups also ensures that the attention is solely on the objects in the shots. The sound used in this opening sequence is significant in hinting at what the narrative may be about. The song featured is "We're Going to Be Friends" by The White Stripes, and the lyrics allow the audience to deduce that the film will revolve around some sort of friendship, as well as being about young people as it is quite a jovial and uplifting song, and is singing about "walking to school", etc. With The White Stripes already being a popular band within the alternative rock genre, the film successfully further attracts a niche audience as fans of the band will find it more appealing if their favourite band's song is featured at the very beginning.
